When I was in Grade 12, I remember my mother tellin me "Ruby, we have moved a total of forth-two times since I married your father. No wonder I had such a low self-esteem early on in school.
My best memories of school began in Grade 3 when I started going to school in Fauquier County. I had a teacher who built my self confidence with praise that I needed desperately. Her name was Lilly E Compton (the maiden name of my maternal grandmother).
Since the Class of '50 was a small class, we had the benefit of more attention from our teachers at Warrenton High School. For me this was an ideal situation and I managed to have an A average in my studies from Grade nine through twelve.
In the spring of 1959 I passed my Civil Service Exam and with only two days vacation after graduation from high school, I went to work for the Federal Government located very near to the National Airport in Washington, DC.
On November 5, 1960, I married Lawrence Andes and we lived on his dad;s dairy farm at Bealeton, VA.
Our first son, Craig was born in August 1962, exactly nine months and eighteen days later. I went from a stenographer's desk to being a busy full time mon (whic included freezing vegetables and fruit frm the garden).
Our seond son, Kevin, was born three years and on month later, Our third son, Brian, was born four years and six months later.
The years of rearing our three children were the happiest and most contented years of my life.
Whil employed at The Forage Researdh Station at Middleburg, VA, my husband got his diploma in reupholstered furniture to the school and take tests. After getting his diploa we moved to Main Street, Marshall, VA, where he went into full- ]time business (Custom Upholstering) from March 1977 until the present time.
Our oldest son, Craig, has been working with his dad for many years along with a young lady who makes slipcovers and lends her expertise as an interior decorator. Our business is now known as Custom Upholstering and Total Restoration.
